Carys Griffiths

Growing up in Langland and Mumbles, I’ve always been close to the water and its charm. I started practicing photography during my A-levels and started shooting in-water and surf from 2014. I believe the textural qualities, light manipulation, depth and emotional calibre is second to none with water and surf photography. My inspiration comes from the shape of water and the polarising chaotic and calm character that the sea possesses. Gower peninsula is a great example of an ever changing sea and I’m lucky to have it on my doorstep.

I like to explore my work through digital, film, instant, collage, emulsion lifts and cyanotypes. Being in the water with surfers also makes your senses work beyond their normal exertion. This actually brings me closer to a more natural way of being and quickly becomes addictive. This meditative state and insight into a wilder thinking pattern is what I try to encapsulate in my prints. Through traditional and modern printing methods I try to mirror the feel of calm and chaos together in one image. During today’s crazy modern day life, a wilder way of living is needed and sought after more and more.
